In a front-end loaded week for economic data, it was reported that November existing home sales declined 8.6% from October and that new home sales of 407,000 units on an annualized basis hit their lowest level in 17 years. Initial jobless claims surged to a 26-year high of 586,000, durable orders declined 1.0% in November, and personal income and personal spending fell 0.2% and 0.6%, respectively, in November. I talked with businessman who own a roller shades and blinds manufacturing company. He told that in his life, year 2008 is the worst year with reference to market.

Separately, MasterCard Spending Pulse said Friday that holiday sales from Nov. 1 to Dec. 24 declined as much as 4%, excluding autos and gasoline. 

Amazon.com (AMZN) for its part said 2008 was its best holiday season ever.  What that means for its income statement remains a mystery, but at least Amazon saw record order activity of its own.

Unfortunately, Amazon will be the exception and not the norm this holiday season.  Consumers have clearly become guarded with their spending activity in the face of concerns about rising unemployment, falling home prices, and much lower stock prices.

Wipro and Citi will sign a master services agreement for delivery of technology infrastructure services and application development and maintenance (ADM) services for six years as part of the deal, under which the banking giant will source services worth at least half a billion dollar from the Indian vendor.

CTSL, with expected revenues of $80 million in 2008, has over 1,650 employees and 400 contractors spread across four development centres in Mumbai and Chennai serving 200 Citigroup clients in 32 global locations. The Citi unit has expertise in ADM for cards, capital markets and corporate banking and remote infrastructure services such as comprehensive server management, network management and systems engineering.

“Wipro plans to absorb all employees of CTSL,” said Mr Girish Paranjpe, Joint CEO of Wipro’s technology business. “The Citi unit is a very well-run business and I don’t see any reason to believe that it will have an impact on the margins,” Mr Paranjpe said. Revenues from the deal would start flowing from March quarter when the transaction is expected to be closed.

Shares of Wipro ended a tad lower on the BSE at Rs 242.85 ahead of the announcement on Tuesday. CTSL is the 13th acquisition by Wipro in recent years. Wipro plans to use Citi as a strong reference customer in the technology infrastructure space from where it earns about a sixth of its revenues. “Any new infrastructure business that gets outsourced by Citi will come to Wipro on an exclusive basis,” said Mr Soumitra Ghosh, Senior Vice-President of Finance Solutions at Wipro. Pressure to cut Japan’s main interest rate — known as the uncollateralized overnight call rate target — had intensified after the U.S. Federal Reserve sliced it own benchmark rate this week to a range of zero to 0.25 percent — the lowest level on record. Analysts said the Fed’s action left Japan, its exporters reeling and economy already in recession, with little choice but to follow suit. An initial surge in Japanese stocks on the rate cut soon petered out, and Tokyo’s 225 stock average dropped 78.71 points, or 0.9 percent, to 8,588.52. The dollar, higher in the morning, weakened against the yen after the Japan central bank’s announcement. Dow Jones go below 10,000 for the first time in last four year.

Wall Street suffered through another extraordinary and traumatic session Monday, with the Dow Jones industrials plunging as much as 800 points — their largest one-day point drop — before recovering to close with a loss of 370. The catalyst for the selling, which also took the Dow below 10,000 for the first time in four years, was investors’ growing despair that the spreading credit crisis will take a heavy toll around the world.

Investors have come to the realization that the Bush administration’s $700 billion rescue plan and steps taken by other governments won’t work quickly to unfreeze the credit markets.

That sent stocks spiraling downward in the U.S., Europe and Asia, and drove investors to sink money into the relative safety of U.S. government debt. Fears about a global recession also caused oil to drop below $90 a barrel.

“The fact is, people are scared and the only thing they’re doing is selling,” said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer’s Investment Research. “Investors are cleaning out portfolios and getting rid of everything because nothing seems to be working.”

The selling was so extreme that only 264 stocks rose on the NYSE — and 2,986 dropped. That’s a telling sign considering the stock market is considered a leading economic indicator, with investors tending to buy and sell based on where they believe the economy will be in six to nine months.

Monday’s stock trading extended what has been an exceptional stretch of volatility, in which triple-digit drops in the Dow are becoming almost commonplace. The steep decline indicates that investors are becoming more convinced that the country is leading a prolonged economic crisis that is shifting to other nations.

“The market view is shifting from looking just at the misery of the financial sector to the global economy,” said Georges Ugeux, chairman and chief executive of New York-based Galileo Global Advisors. “There are enough indication that two things are happening: The crisis is spreading to other sectors, and that it is becoming global.”

Ugeux believes Monday’s rout had little to do with any short-term problems facing the market, such as paralyzed credit markets or ailing financial companies. He believes that, regardless of the late-day rebound in stocks, “the reaction is clearly giving a downtrend and that there is a lack of confidence of investors into the future growth of the U.S. and the world economy.”

The Dow fell as much as 800.06, then recovered in erratic trading to a loss of 369.88, or 3.58 percent, to close at 9,955.50, dropping below 10,000 for the first time since Oct. 29, 2004. The Dow surpassed its previous record for a one-day point decline — 778, which the blue chips suffered a week ago when investors feared the bailout package might not pass Congress.

Broader indexes also tumbled. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index shed 42.34, or 3.85 percent, to 1,056.89; and the Nasdaq composite index fell 84.43, or 4.34 percent, to 1,862.96. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies dropped 23.49, or 3.79 percent, to 595.91.
